It was the year 1000... it seems like the beginning of a legend with knights, duels and fortresses in the heart of Chianti. Certainly the story of the Castle of Montefioralle has the same charm as a fairy tale, because it was precisely in those years that the construction of a small fortified monastery on the top of the hill called Montefioralle (originally Monteficalle) began. Little by little, the village began to be populated with small houses and, as the centuries passed, the settlement grew and was embellished, also thanks to some rich Tuscan noble families who settled there: the Ricasoli, Benci, Gerardini and Buondelmonti families.
Slowly the village took on the appearance of a real castle. The definitive transformation came about thanks to Castruccio Castracani, the famous condottiere and lord of Lucca, who in 1325 took the fortified abbey by force and extended its structure with towers and walls, making it one of the most imposing castles in Chianti. Thanks to its strategic position, the village of Montefioralle, which still dominates the Val di Greve and the ridge of the Chianti Mountains, expanded its prestige and power, and in the 15th century, under the rule of the Republic of Florence, became the most important military and administrative centre in the entire area.
Our excursion to Montefioralle in the Chianti region, along the area's characteristic rolling hills, will take us to admire the splendour of this hamlet through picturesque views of rare beauty, 'decorated' by woods on the summit, vineyards and scattered farmhouses. The walk will take us to a family-run winery (the smallest in the area) which, thanks to just 5 hectares of organically certified vineyards, produces wines of extraordinary elegance.
We will then relax while tasting their flagship wines, including the organic Chianti Classico, along with small local gastronomic delights, all while enjoying the spectacular view of Montefioralle, listed as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
