The Via Romea del Chianti is the road that has linked the two Tuscan cities of art par excellence, Florence and Siena, since the Middle Ages. For many centuries it was used by pilgrims who wanted to reach the Via Francigena on their way to Rome, but it is still practicable today: an approximately 80 km-long path that starts from the Basilica of Santissima Annunziata in Florence and arrives at the Basilica of San Francesco in Siena.
The route follows the Etruscan ridge trail that, with hillside paths and dirt roads, passes through villages and vineyards, skirting castles, mills, farmhouses and medieval abbeys of the Florentine and Sienese Chianti hills. A path, in the heart of Chianti Classico, that allows you to explore, get to know and admire the scenic and cultural beauty of the Chianti area and stay in authentic Tuscan agritourisms.
Our circular route will start from a beautiful historic Chianti Sienese village and former 13th century convent, Casafrassi, located on the ancient Roman road near Castellina in Chianti.
Following part of the route of the Via Romea del Chianti we will arrive at the Etruscan necropolis of Poggino, discovered and then excavated only in the 1980s by the Soprintendenza and the volunteers of the archaeological group 'Salingolpe' of Castellina in Chianti: it will be a stage in which we will be able to immerse ourselves in a dimension rich in history, among the vestiges of a past made up of rites, traditions and cults.
But if we are talking about traditions, the finale of the excursion can only be dedicated to Tuscan food and wine. In fact, at the end of the walk, we will relax while enjoying the magnificent landscape of the Sienese Chianti region and tasting Chianti Classico wine from the Casafrassi farm in combination with some typical Tuscan dishes.
